Pat Morita est né le 28 juin 1930 à Isleton, Californie (Etats-Unis)
Fils d'immigrés japonais, Pat Morita naît en Californie. Alors qu'il débute une carrière de technicien dans l'aéronautique, il décide de tout abandonner pour se consacrer à sa passion, la comédie, d'abord dans des cabarets puis dans des séries télévisées. Il s'illustre dans des séries très populaires des années 70 et 80 comme M.A.S.H., La Croisière s'amuse et Happy days, où il incarne le patron du café dans lequel Fonzie and Co. viennent faire des leurs.
En 1984, son rôle du sage Miyagi dans Karaté Kid, où il entraîne le jeune Ralph Macchio, lui apporte la gloire ainsi qu'une nomination à l'Oscar du Meilleur second rôle. Il reprendra son rôle de malicieux maître d'arts martiaux dans les trois suites, Karaté Kid 2 (1986), Karate Kid 3 (1989) et Miss Karaté Kid (1993, où il forme une Hilary Swank débutante), alors qu'il n'a pas une seule notion de combat à son actif. Pat Morita se fera ensuite plus rare, apparaissant toutefois aux génériques du Even cowgirls get the blues de Gus Van Sant (1993) et prêtant sa voix à l'Empereur de Mulan (1998). Il s'était vu décerner son étoile à Hollywood en 1994.
