Jeremy John Irons est né le 19 septembre 1948 à Cowes sur l'île de Wight en Angleterre
Issu d'une famille aisé (son père était contrôleur fiscal), Jeremy Irons, fasciné par le théâtre, intègre à la fin de son adolescence le Marlowe Theater de Canterbury, puis trois ans plus tard incorpore la troupe du British old Vic. Après avoir multiplié les représentations sur scène, notamment avec la Royal Shakespeare Company, et les rôles pour la télévision anglaise, il fait ses grands débuts au cinéma à 32 ans dans Nijinski (1980), un drame d'Herbert Ross, aux côtés d'Alan Bates.
En 1982, il donne la réplique à Meryl Streep dans La Maitresse du lieutenant francais de Karel Reisz, l'adaptation du roman de John Fowles. Traînant une réputation d'acteur très exigeant et professionnel, Jeremy Irons incarne par la suite un évangéliste jésuite du 18e siècle dans Mission (1986) de Roland Joffé, puis tient le double rôle des jumeaux de Faux-Semblants, l'angoissant film de David Cronenberg.
En 1990, c'est la consécration, puisqu'il reçoit l'Oscar du meilleur acteur pour son interprétation du richissisme comte Von Bulow dans Le Mystère von Bulow de Barbet Schroeder. En 1991, il interprète l'écrivain Kafka dans le film éponyme de Steven Soderbergh. Jouant souvent à l'écran des personnages froids et inquiétants, il tourne ensuite avec des réalisateurs aussi différents que Louis Malle (Fatale 1982), Bille August (La Maison aux esprits 1993). Il retrouve David Cronenberg pour M. Butterfly (1993) .
Après avoir prêté sa voix au Roi lion (1994), le dessin animé de Disney, il fait un retour remarqué dans Une journée en enfer de John McTiernan. En 1997, il reprend le rôle de James Mason dans le remake de Lolita d'Adrian Lyne. Il a alterné depuis grosses productions américaines comme L'Homme au masque de fer (1998) (Randall Wallace) ou encore Donjons & dragons (2000) de Courtney Solomon et films européens. On le retrouve ainsi face à Patricia Kaas dans And now... Ladies and Gentlemen (2002) de Claude Lelouch et une nouvelle fois face à Fanny Ardant dans Callas forever (2002) de Franco Zeffirelli. Il continue ainsi d'alterner les blockbusters comme Eragon (2006) ou Kingdom of Heaven (2005) de Ridley Scott, avec les films d'auteurs comme INLAND EMPIRE de David Lynch (2007).
